Whole School - St Basil's Marketplace

Date: 5th Jul 2024 @ 10:56am

We all had a chance on Friday afternoon to visit our annual St Basil's Marketplace

Throughout the week, we have been creating, budgeting and presenting our items in year groups to sell.

There are activities to try our luck at, such as sweets in the jar, guess the name of the teddy and coordinate treasure maps

We also have a chance to play some carnival games to win prizes, including hook a duck, tombola, penalty shoot outs and a coconut shy.

This year our MartketPlace has raised ...

Y3 - Marketplace Budgeting

Date: 5th Jul 2024 @ 9:30am

This morning, we spent our Maths lesson budgeting our Marketplace products.

We calculated what we had spent,

"The seed cost us £3.27, and the gelatine cost us £3, so altogether we spent £6.27" - Teddy

Then we decided what we should charge for each product. We decided our bird feeders could be between 50p and £2, and the seed packets we made should be cheaper, 10p to £1.

Each group decided what we wanted to charge and worked out our profit.

"I think we should charge in the middle, so that it is not too expensive, but we make a good amount. So £1 for the feeders and 50p for the packets" - Henry M

Y3 - Visit to World Museum

Date: 1st Jul 2024 @ 5:07pm

After our visit to the Empire Theatre, we had the chance to visit the World Museum.

Here we were able to consolidate our learning about classification of animals from our Science unit. We could find examples of reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals and invertebrates in the gallery.

We also managed to squeeze in a quick visit to the Space floor, where a research scientist was tracking the International Space Station and allowed us to watch and ask questions.

"The group of animals I found most of were the mammals, but there were nearly as many reptiles" - Abigail

"I asked the scientist how long it takes the space station to move around the Earth, he said it goes around every two hours!" - Joel

Y3 - Parent Collective Worship - Building Bridges

Date: 1st Jul 2024 @ 5:01pm

At the end of our current topic 'Building Bridges' we gathered our parents for a Collective Worship.

Our theme was all about reconciliation, with God, each other and ourselves.

We performed a dance to 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and showed some of our art work that we had produced in lessons. This showed a friend that we were close to, and a way that we could make our friendship bridge stronger.

Environment Council - Wonky Garden Visit

Date: 1st Jul 2024 @ 4:56pm

The Environment Council took a visit to the Wonky Garden in Widnes.

This is a community garden who have transformed disused land into a space for all to enjoy nature.

We went along with Mrs Sheppard to gather some ideas for our own school grounds work.

We had the chance to harvest some potatoes, which we brought back and cooked with butter and herbs!

The volunteers also gave us some pumpkin plants to plant in our EYFS area. We will keep these nurtured ready for harvesting in Autumn.

Y3 & Y4 - Visit to Liverpool Empire Theatre: Awful Auntie

We travelled on the train to Lime Street Station, then took our seats in the stalls ready for the show.

"Even though we knew what was going to happen, it was really exciting seeing the book come to life!" - Annie

"I've read the book twice, I was so excited to see the show and it did not disappoint" - Henry

"I've never been to the theatre before, it was an amazing building and I really want to go again now" - Jacob

Y3 - Active Maths: Time

Date: 1st Jul 2024 @ 4:40pm

We took our learning outside for our Maths lesson on a lovely sunny day.

We have been learning about minutes past and to on the analogue and digital clocks.

Spread around the race track, each pair drew a digital clock with a time of their choice.

We then moved counter-clockwise around the track, when we met a digital time, we needed to draw the time on an analogue clock.

"This helped me to convert digital to analogue. At first I wasn't sure but Henry (my partner) helped me to understand" - Louie

"I enjoyed learning outside, we could work together and use the chalk to do our workings" - Connie

We counted our laps in 10 minutes.

"I always look forward to the Fun Run. This year I brought my dinosaur costume but still managed to do 15 laps!" - Josh Y4

"I really enjoy dressing up every year and doing the laps with my friends. We always end up on the same because we run side by side" - Holly Y5

In September we picked up our own instrument for the first time and now we are able to play 5 notes in a number of pieces of music.

We can read the notes on the scale and play in different rhythm and tempo.

"I love playing the recorder, I can play B, A and G confidently and I am getting better with D and C" - Henry

"When I started I could only play squeaky notes but now my breathing is much better and I can play really well" - Pani

Each week the children received a new map with different locations. The children also took part in some problem solving activities on the trim trail as a part of OAA this term.

Y3 & Y4 - Visit to Delamere Forest

Date: 18th Jun 2024 @ 9:46am

Year 3 and 4 spent a wonderful day at Delamere forest doing lots of different things. To start the day, the children took a long walk up to Old Pale to take in the great views and what we can see in the North, South, East and West.

The rest of the day consisted of a walk around the forest, den building, sketching, natural artwork made from stones and sticks and a treasure hunt looking for different types of trees and plants.

Date: 12th Jun 2024 @ 2:31pm

On Wednesday 17th January, we were joined by Archbishop Malcolm McMahon and other guests from the Archdiocese of Liverpool, along with Father Mark Moran and our school governors.

We enjoyed some very special events as part of our 'Year of Peace' (2023-24).

The children particpated in prayer spaces with activities that included painting peace pebbles, origami boats for our peace river, hanging peace doves and creating prayers in our prayer garden.

Time was spent reflecting on how peace begins with us and how we can help be bring peace in pur relationships.

Other great activities around school included a Peace Dance, Music to celebrate peace and learning sign language for the song 'Peace perfect peace'.

We were also joined by Peace Pathways who worked with each year group on how to solve problems when there is a conflict.

Y3 & Y4 - The Lost Sheep Roleplay

Date: 10th Jun 2024 @ 11:40am

As part of our unit 'Building Bridges' we explored the Parable of the Lost sheep. We were able to choose how we retold the story. Some of us created story maps or freeze frames with narration. Others told the whole parable through role play.

"The parable shows that God loves everyone, even those who get lost" - Emmie

"The shepherd cared about all of his sheep equally, he did not want to lose even one, just like God" - Jacob

Y3 & Y4 - Textile Artwork

Date: 10th Jun 2024 @ 11:35am

As part of our textiles topic we focused on an underwater theme and the work of two artists.

First we made some still life sketches, focused on curves and movement in material.

Then we explored the work of Hannah Rae a textile artist.

We made some sketches from different marine creatures and added to them using different medium; chalk, pastels and crayon.

Then we chose our final sketch and enlarged this to A3 size.

Finally we have cut and added fabric to our sketch to create pattern, before adding stitching for detail.
