English 2024 - 2025
Curriculum Intent
At St Basil’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that English has a pre-eminent place in education and society. Our English curriculum fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum by providing a broad, balanced and inclusive programme of study. The aim of our English curriculum is to ensure that children acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become fluent readers and competent writers. We recognise the importance literature places in children’s development and by exposing children to a range of culturally diverse texts, our curriculum allows them to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.
Our curriculum is built around units of work that develop spoken language, reading and writing skills through a mastery approach. Whilst being carefully sequenced, each unit of work is tightly focused so children are given repeated opportunities to rehearse their skills enabling them to become fluent readers, writers and speakers.
